JS Celebrates Remembrance Day with Candlelight Ceremony

In the Junior School this week, each student placed a small tea light candle in the Peace Garden at the JS entrance beside the flagpole inside the white picket fence.
The inspiration for this gesture came from a time-honoured practice in The Netherlands where Dutch children place lit candles on the graves of Canadian soldiers in local cemeteries and leave them lit overnight in a silent tribute.

First done in 1995 to commemorate their liberation by Canadian forces 50 years earlier, candlelight tributes are now annual ceremonies throughout The Netherlands and other European countries. It is a beautiful way of honouring those who liberated their country and its people from the Germans during WWII, while encouraging children, their families and veterans to interact and come together.

Similar tributes take place across Canada now as well. Watch our video of the students placing their candles earlier this week, and the end result by night.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
