CDS Hockey Goalie Signs with Boston University

Country Day School’s formidable goalie Mari Pietersen ’22 has recently signed to play with Boston University Women’s Ice Hockey team. She has had her sights set on playing NCAA Division 1 hockey at a school in Boston since Grade 9 and looks forward to pursuing Health Sciences as a student athlete.
According to Mari, BU’s Coach first expressed interest after watching her in action at a showcase tournament when she played for the Aurora Panthers three years ago. The BU Terriers have pursued her ever since.

Mari has recently been recognized for her goaltending this side of the border as well. In July, she was one of 46 female hockey players selected to participate in the National Women’s U18 Team Summer Development Camp Showcase in Calgary, and over the upcoming holiday break she is attending Hockey Canada’s U18 selection camp in St. Catharines, Ont. The outcome will determine whether she plays in the Women’s Jr. World Championships in Sweden this January.

Throughout her 11 years playing hockey, competition between hockey goalies has prompted Mari to move up the ranks quickly from her first year in house league at the age of seven, to starting goalie for the Markham-Stouffville Stars ‘A’ team by her third year.

But it wasn’t until she played for a Peewee team in Scarborough that she realized she could realistically pursue her hockey dreams. While training with a fellow goalie and friend who is now playing for Cornell University, Mari realized she could do that too. “While training with her, I realized that I’m good at this game, and that playing D1 hockey in the U.S. was possible.”

She is currently playing for the Etobicoke Jr. Dolphins in the PWHL (Provincial Women’s Hockey League) and has kept goal for many different teams over her 11 years of play (Markham, Scarborough, Durham and Aurora). She was also an instant sensation on CDS’s Senior Girls’ Hockey team, backstopping the squad to a semi-final CISAA finish in 2020.

Mari is excited for what her future holds and realizes the significance of the upcoming selection camp, with the goal of making the Jr. World Championships. “It isn’t to just get out there and do my best, but also to try and take in every moment and experience; remind myself of that and be grateful.”

We wish Mari all the best in the near term and in years to come!
