Grade 12 Music Students Write Fugues

Nancy Promane
This month during our remote learning, the Grade 12 Music class made a wonderful attempt to write their first composition. The students were tasked with writing a fugue, which is a compositional technique made popular in the Baroque era by J.S. Bach, and continues to be a technique used throughout the history of music. This technique involves the imitation of a short melody that spins into multiple voices. Through the study of J.S. Bach, students looked at the way in which this master composer was able to write in the style of a fugue. This technique is extremely difficult to compose, requiring great detail in both the melody and harmony.
The students were asked to compose a fugue fashioned off the melody, Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. Guidelines were given throughout the project, which resulted in a variety of creative compositions from our budding composers. The students worked diligently on their songs and they are proud to share them with the CDS community. Please enjoy.

Land Acknowledgment

CDS wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. For thousands of years, these have been the traditional lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. We also recognize the traditional territory of the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and the Haudenosaunee peoples who also shared this land.  CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for these lands and waters for future generations.
