Recap of Last Week's Gen Z Parent Association Talk

In January, the CDS Parent Association hosted Dr. Corey Seemiller for an informative presentation on Generation Z.
Dr. Seemiller is a seasoned educator, researcher and speaker on Generation Z. She shared her insights and research on this large generation of children that plan to make a difference in the world. The presentation featured not only a look at the characteristics of this generation, but also a look into why this generation, the first to grow up with technology, the internet and social media, acts and behaves the way they do.

It was a highly informative and as one CDS Parent stated, “I feel like I have better insight into my son now having listened to her findings.”

For those who were unable to join us last Wednesday, we encourage you to take nine minutes to watch one of Dr. Seemiller's Ted Talks to learn more.

Upcoming Parent Gen Z Survey

Understanding Generation Z in broad terms and CDS students in more specific and deeper ways is the goal of the Generation Z committee, a group of 15 teachers who are dedicated to researching and gathering data about Gen Z, and led by Senior School teacher and Head of Social Sciences, Tony Young.

Mr. Young will be sharing a short 10-minute survey on their children's "use of technology, living a balanced life and literacy development" with parents in next week's Backpack. Students in Grades 4-12 will also be asked to complete a similar survey in the coming weeks.

We hope to gain further insights from this exercise as we continue to develop and evolve our curriculum and approach to teaching in order to best meet the needs of all of our learners.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
