Speaker Encourages Students to Challenge their Personal Biases
Last Thursday, the Diversity Committee hosted a very special guest, Michèle Newton, a speaker, expert and advocate, to speak with the Senior School students for Black History Month.
A resident of Barrie, Michèle shares her intersectionality and Black lived experiences through keynote speaking and educational workshops. A public relations and communications expert with more than 25 years experience, she provides unique insights and leading expertise through an equity lens.

A changemaker and advocate, Michèle created Our Mosaic Lives™ - a passion project celebrating Black Canadian women and girls, launched Community Conversations, co-founded Making Change (a Black-led non-profit organization),and contributes to a Diversity and Inclusion column to Simcoe.com.
According to Neyla Kirby ’22, the student coordinator for the Diversity Committee, “Ms. Newton’s talk framed allyship and advocacy in a way that encouraged each student to continue challenging their own personal biases and working towards becoming better members of our community. Every conversation and focused discussion, even those that are uncomfortable, bring us closer to a more inclusive and safe environment for every student."

Land Acknowledgment
The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
