CDS Robotics Team Holds Its Own at FRC
Last weekend, the CDS Robotics team competed in the provincial FRC (FIRST Robotics Competition) over the course of three days. Playing a total of 12 matches, the CDS Cyclones #4951 team placed 25th in the province overall out of 67 teams. Not bad for our first competition in more than two years!
The game is played in three stages. Firstly, Autonomous, where the robot uses sensors and code that was written before the game to drive and shoot. During this time, Human Players are also given a ball that they can try and shoot into the basket from outside of the arena. Secondly, Player Controlled Shooting, the drivers take over and attempt to score as many points as they can by collecting the cargo and shooting them into the central basket. And lastly, in the Climbing stage the players must position the bot to climb up a set of bars, set up in ascending order, gaining the most amount of points if they reach the top rung.
CDS scored a total of 42 points in this tournament with the help of the senior robotics members, and our Faculty Advisors, Mr. Wappel and Mr. Simmonds. Keeping in mind that this was the first out-of-school trip to leave CDS in recent years, the members of the robotics team were extremely excited and grateful for the opportunity.
Additionally, we are proud to say there were an outstanding number of female participants on the team of all ages. For many of the senior members, this was their last multi-day robotics competition with the team.
We hope that next year, #4951 can participate in many more tournaments and use this tournament as a stepping stone to place even higher. Most importantly, we hope we have left a strong legacy for our junior members and have helped create potential leaders for the future.
Land Acknowledgment
