Why Not Me? How the JS Wall Mural Came to Be

At the first Junior School Assembly in September, Mrs. Wildberger announced the theme for the year – Why Not Me? She and the JS teachers have challenged their students throughout the year to embrace this mindset by reaching, dreaming and trying new things.
Following the Assembly, JS Visual Arts Teacher Jo-Anne Kuchmak offered to bring this year’s theme to life visually as a mural in the Junior School to help students feel a connection to it. Ms. Kuchmak came up with some different concepts and they agreed upon a brick wall on which the students could write their dreams, hopes or desires for what they want to be when they grow up.

First, each class spent time crafting their ideas. Then Ms. Kuchmak called students down starting with the primary grades, and every student in JK to Grade 6 eventually had an opportunity to scribe something in their own handwriting on the wall.

According to Shannon Mahan, the JS Admission Coordinator, “This has become a highlight of my tours. I stop and explain how the window and door to the playground were recently replaced with drywall when construction began. Then in typical JS fashion, Jo-Anne turned the drywall into beautiful art; just another example of the magic that happens in the classrooms each and every day!”

“The parents spend a lot of time reading the quotes. We smile as the quotes, spelling and penmanship of the wee ones are so adorably authentic. They then comment on how powerful the messages are and love to see that our children wrote them themselves!”

Land Acknowledgment

CDS wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. For thousands of years, these have been the traditional lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. We also recognize the traditional territory of the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and the Haudenosaunee peoples who also shared this land.  CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for these lands and waters for future generations.
