Guest Speaker Challenges Students to Seek Out Diverse Perspectives

The Diversity Committee hosted a Senior School advisor morning last fall with Nora Loreto, a Canadian journalist and activist. Following her talk there was an incredible amount of student engagement, in which many questioned, passionately agreed with, or challenged some of the ideas she discussed. As a committee, they decided that the best course of action would be to continue an important conversation by hosting a followup Q&A to get students’ questions answered.
According to Neyla Kirby '22, the Student Coordinator for Diversity Committee who conducted the follow up Q&A interview, "What stood out to me about Ms. Loreto was her own active effort to challenge her beliefs and opinions in seeking out diverse perspectives through media and conversations. It is only in being challenged and engaging with different opinions that we are able to develop our own sense of perspective and understanding of the greater picture, as Ms. Loreto pushed us all to do during her talk."

Senior School students can request access to the entire video via their GX email account.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
