Kudos to our Junior School Mathematicians!
In April, many Grade 3, 4, 5 and 6 students wrote the annual Canada-wide Mathematica math contests. Students began preparing for these tests back in term one. We have waited a long time and the results are finally in. In each of the contests, The Country Day School performed well with the majority of students finishing above the national average.
Here are the results (excerpts taken from Monday’s final Junior School Assembly):
In Grade 3, we had five young mathematicians write the Thales math contest: Michael Malfara, Wesley Bianchi, Mario Nikolaev, Anna Pitts and Jerry Liu. This eager group of students began the year developing their problem solving skills and started practicing and preparing specifically for this test in early January. This was their first experience writing a math contest, and I am extremely proud of their effort and perseverance. The National average was 14.66 out of a possible 30, which demonstrates just how challenging this test was. As a school, we placed 45 out of 186 schools. This year’s student with the top score for the Thales test at The Country Day School and who also made the honour roll is Wesley Bianchi.
This year in Grade 4, there were 14 students who wrote the Byron Germain contest. It was a very difficult test with a Canadian average score this year of only 17.67/30. Many of our students finished well above the national average and seven of our students made the honour roll which was a wonderful accomplishment, especially when you consider that 5568 students wrote the test. Congratulations to all of the Grade 4 students who participated. This year’s student with the top score for the Byron Germain contest was Gilbert Huang.
This year in Grade 5, there were 25 students who wrote the Fibonacci math contest. This test proved to be difficult with an average score of 24/40. Many of our students finished above the national average and eight of our students made the honour roll. Congratulations to all of the Grade 5 students who worked so hard to prepare for this test. I am pleased to announce that we have two students who tied for the top score at CDS. Our Fibonacci champions for this year are Mina Matsui and Santtu Koskinen.
In Grade 6, there were 27 students who wrote the challenging Pythagoras contest. This contest was so challenging that the national average was only 31.25 out of 50! We are very pleased and proud to say that 75% of our students finished above the national average. Congratulations to all who participated and stretched their math brains with us. Now we are excited to announce our Grade 6 school champion with a score of 98% - Kevin Zhai.
Certificates were handed out in the respective classrooms on Monday. Congratulations once again to our school champions and all participants!
Land Acknowledgment
The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
