Story Walk Honouring Orange Shirt Day

Hillary Hall, JS Librarian
In recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, our Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6 students were invited to participate in an interactive ‘Story Walk’ experience celebrating Indigenous culture and traditions in our outdoor classroom located between our Junior and Middle Schools.
Enlarged pages on posts from the picture book, On the Trapline (winner of the 2021 Governor General’s Literary Award for young people’s literature–illustrated books) by author David A. Robertson and illustrated by Julie Flett, were situated along a path directing readers to read and walk from one page to the next.

Students were able to immerse themselves in nature as they explored this story that honours our connections to our past and our grandfathers and fathers. Many of the Story Walk pages also contained QR codes with links to additional author information and videos that students could access with iPads to further their learning.

In this heartfelt story about memory, imagination and intergenerational connections, a boy and his grandfather (his ‘Moshom’ in the Cree language) journey north to visit the area where Moshom grew up on a trapline and lived off the land. The book captures the experience of a young child’s wonder as he is introduced to meaningful stories and places for his family. Thank you to all our students and staff who also shared in this wonder by participating in this Story Walk and honouring Orange Shirt Day.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
