Wild About Animals

Jennifer Vipond
The Senior Kindergarten students went on their very first field trip to the Toronto Zoo last week. Their adventure began with an educational lesson from the zoo staff about the characteristics and needs of living things. They learned how beavers use webbed feet for swimming and how tigers have giant whiskers to sense their surroundings.
In the afternoon, the students explored different areas of the zoo and searched for the animal they chose to research. Once found, the students looked closely at their animal and its habitat. All of this information will come in handy when the class creates its own zoo later this month.

Some highlights from the trip were riding the carousel, trying to feed a hungry giraffe, and coming face-to-face with a sleeping polar bear. The SK's first field trip was a success — the weather was perfect, the animals were adorable, and the smiles on the students' faces were priceless!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
