Grade 8 History Students Visit Local Cemetary

Jayne Wyvill Abubakar
Over the past few weeks, all of the Grade 8 History classes have crossed Dufferin Street to visit the historic St. Andrew's Cemetery. The aim was to learn some local history and collect data about the former King residents who are buried there.
Students have done some investigative work to find out more about the individuals named and draw conclusions about trends found in relation to contemporary historical events of the mid 1800s. Our trips happened to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the King Township Historical Society (KTHS), and students were surprised to learn that Reverend Tawse of the St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church would pause teaching school lessons in Eversley Schoolhouse to perform wedding ceremonies for couples with his students giggling in the background.

We are currently focusing on Canadian Women's History Month. Students are going to be working on their research skills to produce a profile of an influential Canadian woman which will be put on display in the form of a flag.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
