Waterloo Beaver Computing Challenge

Last month, 32 Grade 7 and 8 students competed in the annual University of Waterloo Beaver Computing Challenge here at CDS in their math classes.

This challenging contest aims to introduce computer science concepts to students who have little or no previous experience with computing. The BCC is a paperless, on-line problem solving contest with focus on computational skills and logical thinking. Questions are inspired by real-world topics in computer science and mathematics.
This year, there were 11241 overall participants worldwide. The worldwide average was 65.51 out of 90.

Certificates of Distinction are awarded to students who achieved 78 out of 90 or higher. This year, Certificates of Distinction were earned by the following students:

  • With a score of 80: Yuling Qian (Grade 8)
  • With a score of 82: Liam Gunning (Grade 8)
The remaining recipients are also part of the Beaver Computing Challenge Honour Roll, which is obtained for scores of 84 or higher amongst all participants worldwide:

  • With a score of 86: Adamson Fan (Grade 8) and Lucas Juhasz (Grade 7)
  • And finally, our school high score of 88 was achieved by two students: Ray Wang (Grade 8) and Dylan Matsui (Grade 8).

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
