Grade 11 & 12 Students Travel to MOCA

The Grade 11 and 12 art classes visited the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Toronto last week to take in the exhibit of Kelly Jazvac's work "Time Scale" and the combined works of Thomas Denmane, Martin Boyce, Rirkrit Tiravanija and Caruso St John entitled "House of Card".
The students learned about Jazvac's upcycling of large plastic billboards that add social context to the combined images. As well, in examining "House of Card" they were exposed to artworks that are interactive as well as incorporating a variety of non-traditional mediums such as Paper sculpture, model making and collage.

In the afternoon, they took part in a studio activity where they worked with collage processes and concepts to create their own pieces. The gallery provided an opportunity for the classes to experience contemporary art, expanding upon what they are learning in class.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
