Artwork on Full Display in the Junior School

Ms. Jo-Anne Kuchmak had her students artwork out on full display for last week’s Open House and her classroom looked like a mini art museum! We encourage you to take the time to read the following descriptions and peruse the galleries to see what our budding artists have been up to as of late.
This term the Grade 4 students completed a mixed-media assignment that was based on Andy Warhol and complimentary colours. Students learned about who Andy Warhol was and what Pop Art is. They learned how to draw a real-life object using simple shapes and about how to mix colours. The Grade 4s were invited to choose any everyday object of their choice, and they should be proud of the excellent work they produced.

For this project, the Grade 5 students learned about the Metis and their style of painting. Students also learned about the 7 Sacred Teachings of the Metis and Indigenous people of Canada.

For this piece, students were asked to choose a word that was meaningful to them and that was based on either the 7 Sacred Teachings or was from The Country Day School’s Character Traits. Once their word was selected, like the Metis, the Grade 5s had to come up with animals that they believed represented their word.

Finally, students painted an original and unique composition using Metis-inspired painting techniques (flat, bold colour) and completed their work on a drum!

This project is called the “We Beat” project and symbolizes what makes the Grade 5s beat each day: love, respect, courage, honesty, wisdom, humility, truth, kindness, gratitude, wisdom, perseverance, accountability, acceptance, curiosity, conservation, trustworthiness.

The Grade 6 students this term spent time learning a variety of watercolour painting techniques. For their assignment they were asked to choose an invertebrate (connecting their Science curriculum with Visual Art) and learned about various ways to create a unique composition using framing and multiples.

Students were further challenged to apply their knowledge of colour theory in order to strengthen their final painting. The Grade 6 students are to be commended on their outstanding work.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
