CDS Snowboard Team Finds Success on the Slopes Once Again

Jen Weening, Snowboarding Coach
Following on the heels of a successful but shortened 2022 snowboard season, The Country Day School snowboard team made the most of their momentum to find even more success this year. Our first complete season in three years, consisting of two on hill training days, five CISAA events, OFSAA, and a provincial snowboard cross invitational, this winter was another one for the history books.
With a smaller team than past years, hopes were high that we would still be able to take home another CISAA championship before the inevitable graduation of many of our most seasoned athletes. It was clear from our first regular season event that this was a distinct possibility. Each week, at events at Alpine Ski Club, Devil’s Glen, and Mount St Louis, our riders had strong finishes. Sarin Gosal ‘24, our lone U20 female rider, finished first in every single regular season GS race, and Alex Labelle ‘25 took two first and two second place finishes in her U16 girls’ division.

In the U20 boys’ division, Tyler Bannerman ‘23 had one first place and two second place finishes, and Evan Labelle ‘23 was right on his heels with two third place and one second place finish. As a team, the CDS boys finished first in three out of our four regular season GS races as well. All of this meant that we were in strong contention to bring home some serious hardware at our championship event at Craigleith on February 8.

In the end, a tight finish on championship day meant that the CDS boys eked out the CISAA boys championship plaque for the sixth time in seven seasons. Individually, Tyler Bannerman brought home a silver medal for U20 boys GS. Unsurprisingly, Sarin Gosal brought home individual gold in U20 girls GS, but a tough day for Alex Labelle led to a disappointing third place finish overall, both in GS and Slopestyle. Alan Lin ‘27, our lone U14 competitor, brought home a bronze medal in GS and a gold medal in Slopestyle.

With that, our boys team and Sarin Gosal were headed to OFSAA, where, on March 1 at Devil’s Glen, a clutch 22nd place performance by Evan Dallimore ‘23, combined with Tyler’s 7th place and Kavan Fredric’s ‘23 30th place, led our boys team to a third place finish overall. Sarin, in gunning for gold at the provincial level, blew out in her first run, finishing 37th overall.

Now, with the impending graduation of the majority of our boys’ team, the CDS snowboard team will be celebrating this season’s success as we turn our focus to rebuilding to ensure the team stays strong for years to come.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
