May is Asian Heritage Month
Last week, Carolyn Du ‘24 spoke at Assembly about the Diversity Club’s plans to help honour Asian Heritage Month throughout the month of May. For starters, Zak Khan ‘25 and Aidan Scholten ‘25 helped create an Asian language version of O Canada consisting of four different languages - Punjabi, Mandarin, Tamil, and Tagalog.
Carolyn shared the following: “Asian Heritage Month in Canada was officially recognized by the government in 2002. The month of May was chosen to celebrate the contributions, culture, and history of Canadians of Asian descent because it coincides with the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants in May 1877, and the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway in May 1885, which was largely built by Chinese immigrants.
“The celebration is an opportunity to recognize the important role that Asian Canadians have played in shaping Canada's social and cultural landscape, as well as to celebrate the diversity and cultural richness of our communities.
“Throughout the month, the Diversity Club will be hosting a range of fun activities, including art displays and calligraphy workshops on May 16th and traditional board game competitions on May 17th to allow the CDS community to learn more about Asian history, art, and traditions.”
Carolyn encouraged everyone to partake in these activities by the Winch Family Learning Stairs during lunch on May 16th and 17th.
Land Acknowledgment
The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
