Students Shine in JS Public Speaking Competition

Kelly Johnson
Junior School held its 13th annual Public Speaking Competition last Friday for students in Grades 5 and 6. Two contest finalists were selected from each Grade 5 and 6 classroom to speak at the competition. The speakers came poised and prepared to share their original speeches with parents, judges, and students from Grades 4-6.
Special thanks to Mr. Harvey, Mr. Liggett and Mrs. Wildberger for their expertise in listening and judging our speeches. By the end of the event, it was clear that two finalists stood out - in Grade 5, the first place winner was Rachel McKenzie for her speech titled, COVID Changed the Lives of Everyone. In Grade 6, the first place winner was Charlize Bianchi for her speech titled, Artificial Intelligence. Both winners then presented their speeches to a packed Middle and Senior School assembly on Monday. Their calm and confident performance was exceptional!

Congratulations to following finalists for their participation in the competition: Karson O’Connor, Portia Juhasz, Shivai Sharma, Eliza Shulman, Sophia Gougoulias, Shayan Guerra-Jain, Charlize Bianchi, Samir Mistry, Charlotte Griffin, Arren Shah and Logan Colozza.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
