Grade 5s Learn Importance of Community Involvement

Mrs. Cooke, Mrs. Courtemanche & Mrs. Johnson
Students in Grade 5 have been busy advocating for their communities over the last three months. As part of our Government and Citizenship unit, students identified areas and issues in their communities that could be improved and then wrote to their mayors.
Mayors from King Township, Aurora, Vaughan, Richmond Hill and Stouffville read the letters and have responded with recognition and gratitude for the students’ involvement. Then on April 6th, our Grade 5 classes visited Mayor Steve Pellegrini at the King Township Municipal Centre. During the visit, he answered our questions about development and the environment in King Township and he took us on a tour of the new municipal building on King Road.

Mayor Tom Mrakas came to our classroom on April 25th. He was excited to hear our ideas for change and he brought student letters so he could address the concerns in person. Students asked about traffic calming measures to be implemented in their neighbourhoods. Mayor Mrakas was proud to show us the Chain of Office - highlighting the significant elements. When asked if he found decision making to be difficult, he said, “Sometimes you get it right, and sometimes you get it wrong. But, you learn from your experiences.”

We are proud of the Grade 5 students for taking an interest in their communities and advocating for change.

Land Acknowledgment

CDS wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. For thousands of years, these have been the traditional lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. We also recognize the traditional territory of the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and the Haudenosaunee peoples who also shared this land.  CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for these lands and waters for future generations.
