Paul Duckett: 1989-2011
Paul Duckett took over as Headmaster of The Country Day School in 1989 and continued to serve CDS for 22 years. During his first year, he set out to develop a vision with strategies to build the School academically and strengthen it financially.
Three important platforms in Paul’s original plan still resonate today: provide students with the very best facilities; employ the best teachers; and, build an endowment to secure the long term future for the School.
Trained as a teacher at London University in the United Kingdom, Paul has a degree in Mathematics from the University of Waterloo. During his educational career, which spanned more than 40 years, he served seven different school communities and held the positions of Mathematics Teacher, Mathematics Department Head, Director of Academic Studies, Assistant Head of School and Headmaster.
The campus developments at The Country Day School during Paul's tenure mirrored the School’s commitment to provide an education with balance. CDS students continue to benefit from sophisticated academic spaces, including two very well equipped libraries and two Learning Resource Centres that are tailored to students’ needs; leading-edge technology that is thoughtfully integrated to accentuate the curriculum; an incredible athletics complex which includes 3 gymnasiums and 10 playing fields; and a modern Performing Arts Centre that is technically and acoustically outstanding.
At the time of Paul's departure in 2011 the School had made considerable strides toward building endowment and was debt free. CDS was also established as one of the best independent schools in Canada. Paul has continued to teach and tutor math both privately and at several independent schools, including Havergal College and Neuchatel Junior College in Switzerland.
Land Acknowledgment
The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
