CDS Supports Disaster Relief in the Philippines

All too often of late, natural disasters have transformed the everyday lives of people, into a state incomprehensible to most of us.
As the result of the recent typhoon in the Philippines - the largest storm to ever make landfall anywhere in the world -  the Head of the Red Cross has described  the country as being “in a state of absolute bedlam.”

In this particular natural disaster, help is needed immediately to deal with the pressing needs of food, water and shelter. I am asking the CDS community to rally together to help this cause - our school was built on the concept of community. This week and next we will be taking every opportunity to connect our students, in an age-appropriate manner, to the social and global issues raised by tragic events in the Philippines.

We will be apportioning the proceeds from next Friday’s grub day (which will now be a full school K-12 event) to support the Red Cross disaster relief effort in the Philippines. I understand that your family may have already lent their support to this cause, but trust that you will encourage your children to make an open donation as a part of this community support activity. If individuals wish to take advantage of the Government of Canada’s donation matching program they should donate directly to the charity of their choice, as our collected school donation will not qualify for this matching program. Unfortunately, given the community collection of donations for our CDS response, tax receipts cannot be issued.

Thank you for your support.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
