Recipe #4: Lunch: Our New Centre Attraction

In many houses, the kitchen is thought of as the centre of the home. The same will be true of our new Dining Hall and Marché-style kitchen here at CDS, with just a short walk to each of the Junior, Middle and Senior Schools.

Our Dining Hall will feature a high, open, wood ceiling, a central fireplace, a mezzanine for additional seating and be able to seat more than 300 students at a time.

How will we feed 700 students?
Lunch will take place in three distinct and staggered sittings, each dedicated to one of our Junior, Middle or Senior Schools. According to our preliminary plan, Junior students will eat first, followed by Senior and then Middle School students in 30-40 minute intervals around the noon hour. Our visits to other facilities have demonstrated that this is ample time to handle the food service we envision and will allow our students enough time to appropriately “pause” and make the eating of a healthy and hot lunch a priority, rather than something that is rushed.

If your son or daughter is on a CDS field trip (other than extended overnight trips) or at an athletic game, a healthy boxed lunch will be provided.

Students in the Junior School will also receive a healthy snack every day as part of the new lunch program. As well, fruit will be available in our Dining Hall every day, all day, for all students!

Next week’s recipe will focus on cooking from scratch, using local foods.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
