CDS Alum Makes World Cup Debut

The Women’s World Cup kicked off last weekend in Edmonton as the world watched the opening match between Canada and China.  Both teams had chances throughout the match, but a disappointing, scoreless draw almost seemed inevitable.

With the world’s eyes watching, the difference maker proved to be CDS Alum and Canadian Attacking Midfielder/Striker Adriana Leon ’10.  After being subbed into the game in the 77th minute, Leon had to wait until injury time to beat a Chinese defender to a loose ball in the penalty box, drawing a foul that would give Canada a chance to grab three very important points.

Christine Sinclair converted the penalty and settled the nerves, but it was the great movement, and speed from Leon that gave Canada the chance to take top spot in Group A.

Adriana and the Canadian Women’s National Team return to the same field tomorrow night, but this time, against New Zealand.  A match you can watch on CTV at 9 P.M.

Good luck Adriana!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
