The Nature of Change: Innovative Learning

As the first unit of our new Grade 12 course, The Nature of Change: Innovative Learning, draws to a close, we would like to share briefly with you its innovative approach to teaching and learning.
This program is fully interdisciplinary: it explores a variety of themes connected to the topic of change from numerous subject areas and encourages students, through independent-study projects, to understand the connections among diverse ideas and concepts.

The guiding theme of our first unit, opposing forces create change, was introduced by exploring the birth, life and death of stars. Students were then provided with three applications of this concept from diverse perspectives: history and social science, music and technology, and philosophy and literature. The remaining two thirds of the unit has been devoted to students working independently and with one (or more) of the four teachers of the course to research, plan and present their findings on a self-selected topic connected to the unit theme.

Here are just a few of the projects on which students are currently working: a short story on social responsibility and individualism, a TedTalk on the Super Position of Light, an essay on the structure of the psyche, a dialogue on two visions of the humanist ideal, and a photo collage examining contemporary societal prescriptions on the nature of female beauty. As you can imagine, we are very excited about the depth of learning this course affords our students.

Land Acknowledgment

CDS wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. For thousands of years, these have been the traditional lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. We also recognize the traditional territory of the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and the Haudenosaunee peoples who also shared this land.  CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for these lands and waters for future generations.
