Marilyn's obituary may be found here.

In the 2008 Fall Link magazine, news of her retirement was shared as follows:

When you’ve been in a school for as long as Marilyn has been at CDS, you become part of the fabric of that school. So many students in this room today have passed through Ms. Souther’s class and they are so much the better for having done so. We say that these students have been Southerized. The hallmarks of her classroom are that it is a place that fosters a love of reading – students don’t just learn to read in 1S, they learn to love it. It is also a place that celebrates a caring respect for nature and everyone knows that Marilyn’s room is a veritable zoo within the school.

Over the years, students have adored Ms. Souther and parents have gained comfort in knowing their child was in the hands of a true primary education expert. And now Marilyn is retiring. After so many years, when someone tells you that they’re going, you start to think about what will be left behind. A legacy is a powerful thing. It is a constant reminder that your time and effort are remembered and valued. At a recent retirement party, members of the Junior School faculty spoke about the positive impact Marilyn had on them from the first day they stepped into the School. I’m sure that children who have passed through her hands feel the same way. A legacy is a particularly powerful thing if it transforms the people you have touched as you go about your working day.

Marilyn has been involved, insightful, caring, humorous and transformative. Her impact on the people in the CDS community is her legacy. So it is a very sad day for the CDS community as we say goodbye to Marilyn. Perhaps a little sad for Marilyn too, though I know she will now be able to do the many things that she has been unable to do because work always came first.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
