CDS Welcomes Colleagues for CITE AGM

Sarah Hudson
CDS hosted the annual Conference of Independent Schools Teachers of English (CITE) AGM on October 13 in the Scheinberg Family Library. The event was well attended, with 18 teachers from eight different independent schools.

The focus of this year’s events – “How do you want to be heard?” – was introduced in preparation for the upcoming conference (held on April 8 at St. Clement’s School). Director of Senior School, Celia Bland, then introduced our guest presenter - award-winning SLAM poet, writer, and musician, Brendan McLeod. In doing so, she highlighted the importance CDS places on face-to-face communication and reminding us of the value of ensuring that everyone’s voices are heard. McLeod was an enthusiastic and engaging performer, showing us how rap, poetry, and music can be integrated into our lessons and giving us practical strategies for improving students’ writing.

At the end of the evening, guests enjoyed a delicious dinner in our Dining Hall; everyone commented on our beautiful and welcoming new facility and marvelled at how delicious the meal was! The next CITE event will take place on February 9, 2017 at Greenwood College School.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
