New Space for our Robots

Pictured to the right, is The Country Day School’s newest playroom – our new robotics lab! While much of our facility-related attention of late has understandably been on our new Dining Hall and rejuvenated Senior School, there are other interesting areas being repurposed as well.

The dedicated space for robotics came when parts of the old Senior School were vacated. In fact this area was previously a staff workroom (named The Love Family Room) and many moons ago served as the band room! Now music of a different sort is being made here and it would be classified as techno for sure.

Not only do our students compete in the Vex Robotics program, but they also take part in the prestigious and challenging FIRST Robotics Competition (or FRC) where teams from across North America build a very complicated and capable robot designed to carry out very specific and unique tasks. The program not only fosters the predictable computer engineering, math, science and design skills, but also promotes task-oriented and coordinated team work. Our new computer engineering courses are also taught in this room.

Even though our “Team 4951” is only in its third year of competition, we have already assembled some incredibly impressive results and certainly an equally impressive set of experiences for our learners. A number of our Alumni were back recently during Reading Week to help out Mr. Wappel (pictured right) and this year’s team with this year’s robot.

Team 4951 left this morning to compete in a 3-day “Stronghold” FRC event at Ryerson University and will travel to Windsor for the final meet in April.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
