Academic Assembly Highlights: Make Learning Fun!

One of the themes of Monday’s Middle/Senior Academic Assembly was that education can be fun! Mr. Harvey congratulated our six impressive Math Award recipients (see story below) for choosing to compete in math competitions because they are fun. In the same vein, Ms. Aldoroty recognized three GY students, Matthew, Ryan and Costa, for competing in a DECA Stock Market Challenge that was a lot of work, but also fun for them.
A recent study out of Harvard University has explored how "play is our brain's favourite way of learning." To further illustrate this, Mr. Harvey asked two GY students, Maddie and Layla, both enthusiastic learners in his Philosophy class, to share why they choose to approach each school day with a positive attitude, and how it makes a world of difference in their learning outcomes.

A second theme was connected to this this week’s course-selection process. Mr. Harvey encouraged students to try and become more conscious of who they are as learners - of how they are built - and to choose courses that suit their learning needs and interests for the future. This was echoed by another GY student, Ryan, who suggested that students choose courses that interest them and align with what they want to pursue in university and life.

Course selection forms must be digitally signed off on by parents and are due to the Student Services Centre (SSC) by Friday, January 26.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
