Grade 10 & 12 Art Classes Visit the Art Gallery of Ontario
On February 2, the Grade 10 and Grade 12 art classes visited the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO). While at the gallery, they took part in a tour that focused on the idea of a "Time Machine", examining a variety of art genres and artists and how they related to global connections and cultural exchanges, primarily through memory.
Students began the tour with a discussion of the Thomson Collection of model ships, created from memory and of readily found materials. As they journeyed through the gallery, they discovered the works of Sarindar Dhaliwal, who investigates memory, identity and migration through mixed media and installation pieces. Next, they headed up to the 4th floor to look at the exhibition "Life Between Islands", a collection of Carribean-British art that addresses the role of culture in decolonization, the meaning of home and reclaiming of ancestral traditions.
Their final destination was to see the exhibition "KAWS: FAMILY" featuring artworks by the artist KAWS, focusing on the connections made to family through recognizable forms. His pieces utilize appropriated pop culture icons mixed with his own stylistic additions to convey a deeper connection beyond the visual. His exploration of family incorporates the ideas of protector, connection and dependence.
Land Acknowledgment
The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
