CDS Alumna Introduces Grade 1s to the Bassoon

The Grade 1 Music classes began to learn about the instruments of the Orchestra recently by using the symphonic tale for children, Peter and the Wolf. This musical composition was written by Sergei Prokofiev in 1936. The narrator tells a children's story, which the orchestra illustrates by using different instruments to play a "theme" that represents each character in the story. It is Prokofiev's most frequently performed work.
The students learned about each instrument and the character it represents. When it came time to learn about the bassoon, Ms. Baird reached out to CDS Alumna Bianca Chambul ‘12. Bianca is the principal bassoonist for the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. She was excited to record a video introducing the bassoon, as well as play the grandfather's theme for the Grade 1 students. Students were excited to see a former CDS student personally reach out to them.

They were very grateful to have had this experience and decided to send Bianca a thank you video in return! Ms. Baird was also very thankful to have such a talented and compassionate artist take time out of her performance schedule to share her love of playing the bassoon with the grade ones. You can read about Bianca here, and if you ever get out to Edmonton, stop by the symphony to hear this amazing musician perform!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
