Middle School VEX Robotics

Jen Weening
Last Saturday, eight members of the Middle School robotics team attended the VEX Lunar New Year qualifying tournament at the International Centre in Mississauga. Of the 43 teams in attendance, Team 4951A, consisting of Lucas Juhasz, Nikhil Mithra, James Muter and Jahan Somaiya, finished 26th overall, and 4951B of Michael Chen, Austin Cheng, Chauncey Li and Samir Mistry finished a respectable 33rd place. Both teams made CDS proud as they engaged all day in learning, engineering, strategizing, driving, and troubleshooting their robot.
To top off a fantastic day,  we learned that team 4951B was awarded the Judges' Award at the end of the competition, "presented to a team that is most deserving of special recognition. Judges consider several criteria for this award, including exemplary effort and perseverance at the event, team accomplishments throughout the season, or other factors that may not fall under existing award categories."

So while their robots may not have been successful in cracking the top 10 finish positions, it was clear that our team made its mark and was successful in representing the school with pride and honour.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
