The Oscars 2024: Film Class Competition Winner

Prior to the March Break, Ms. Moonan's Grade 12 Film class kept a close eye on Hollywood's award season, culminating in a competition to predict which films and individuals would win at the 96th Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars.

The Oscars took place over the break, on March 10th. Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer was the most celebrated winner of the evening, securing 7 of 13 nominations, though the night will likely be best remembered for Ryan Gosling's exuberant rendition of Barbie's "I'm Just Ken" and Emma Stone's teary acceptance speech for Best Actress.

Amongst The Country Day School's film students, the competition was fierce and it was a close call. Despite this challenge, Olivia Cuscuna '24 achieved victory by scoring the highest number of correct predictions. Olivia successfully predicted both of the writing awards (Original and Adapted Screenplay), both musical awards (Score and Original Song), all four of the major acting awards (Best and Supporting Actors and Actresses), as well as many other categories.

Olivia has reported that her favourite film nominated this year was Oppenheimer due to the beautiful cinematography and historical connections, though it was a tough choice as she also enjoyed The Holdovers and Poor Things. As for Film class, Olivia's favourite movie to study so far has been Pan's Labyrinth because of Guillermo del Toro and his team's use of mise-en-scène, particularly the fantastical set design.

Congratulations to all who competed!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
