Atmosphere is an Important CDS Quality

In my last Heads Up entry I wrote about data-driven schools – the recent trend of schools endeavoring to quantify as many variables as possible in order to measure success, or improvement. While The Country Day School could produce many impressive statistical measures to demonstrate its success, it is my opinion that these qualitative measures are not at the root of our success.

At one of the community charrettes we held last fall, during which we elicited feedback as to how our new building project might look, I was struck by the response of our Student Council President, Merissa Scott. Merissa indicated that she hoped the new building would retain some of the character of the old building, because she felt strongly that the “feel” of the building was a large measure of the School’s success. Merissa used the word “cozy” to describe the atmosphere – and certainly cozy is about as far from a quantitative measure as you can imagine! In fact, one of the most important precursors for learning is that students feel safe and comfortable. This intangible, yet incredibly important notion of creating a “cozy” new Senior School and dining hall has become a significant design driver in our new project – thanks Merissa!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
