Recipe #3: Something Healthy for Everyone

In our health-conscious culture, we must be increasingly aware of the needs of those individuals who have special dietary restrictions. Our Country Kitchen will not only be nut-free, but equipped to safely handle all food allergies and intolerances, as well as the need for gluten-free, low-fat and low-sodium options.
For students with food allergies, our “allergy aware” professional kitchen staff will present food in a safe fashion so as to avoid cross-contamination and will offer additional products that can be enjoyed without compromising our children’s safety. Additionally, parents of students with food allergies and sensitivities will be encouraged to meet with our chef and kitchen staff prior to the official opening to ensure that they are comfortable with the “safe” offerings available.

Our Marché Country Kitchen will feature digital and kid-friendly signage and symbols that clearly identify vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and locally and sustainably grown food choices. All menu items will also be available online to allow students and parents to browse the broad spectrum of choices available.

We will also launch a “Get the Good Stuff” program that will feature an eye-catching icon to allow students to easily spot (and understand) why certain choices are healthier options. Students will have nutritional details at their fingertips to allow them to make their own healthy decisions, with menu items developed following the principles of the “Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide”.

Next week’s recipe will focus on how our Country Kitchen will deal with the mechanics of feeding more than 700 people ...

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
