Inclement Weather Procedure
WHY?
Snow days and extreme cold weather days are called in the interests of student safety. Our community is quite unique in terms of the wide geographical areas our students are drawn from. Everyone arrives at CDS by some mode of vehicular transport, many by bus and there is often a great distance between school and home. Safety on the roads is therefore the primary concern.
HOW?
Our professional bus drivers are on the roads very early in the morning across a wide swath of our family’s geography. We rely on our transportation contractor to give us a very early indication as to the safety of road conditions across our catchment area.

WHEN?
In most cases we are able to make a determination of road safety by 6:30 a.m. Should weather and driving conditions become dangerous once students are at school, we would move to an early dismissal schedule and let the community know by 1:00 pm.

WHERE?
We will post information on the CDS homepage (that’s the best place to check) and a text and e-mail will be sent to the entire CDS community. If you receive The Backpack, you will receive the e-mail message. If not, contact Community Relations to update your e-mail address to ensure you are receiving all notifications.
We will also post to our social media channels (Instagram and Facebook) and there will also be a message available at the CDS phone number (905) 833-1220. If an off-site trip is scheduled for that day, where appropriate, you will also be contacted by the faculty member in charge of that activity.

Snow Day Protocol
When weather prediction permits, we will announce the possibility of a snow day to the Middle & Senior School students the day before – think of it as a Code Snow! This is to hopefully lessen the loss of instructional time that is normally associated with a snow day.
When a Code Snow is called, Middle and Senior School students will take home all books and texts required for their studies the next day, as well as any study material for a scheduled test the subsequent day. Should a snow day be called, Grades 7-12 students MUST login to their class pages for work required in their scheduled courses. Teachers will post instructions for each course by 9:00 am.
Junior School faculty will also place reminders on class pages for parents to check in the event of a snow day. For older students this will include reading and class work, and for younger students, suggested snow day activities.

In brief – think of a Code Snow as preparation for a possible snow event the following day.

Land Acknowledgment
The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
