Grade 7 Student Places 3rd in Royal Canadian Legion Contest
Last November, the Royal Canadian Legion and schools across the country, invited Canadian students to honour Canada’s Veterans and foster the tradition of Remembrance through visual art, writing, and video, as part of the National Youth Remembrance Contests.
Mr. Calmels and Ms. Williams encouraged their students to submit Remembrance Day poems and writings to the competition through the Legion’s Aurora Division, and last week we were excited to receive the news that Elise De Guia in Grade 7 was awarded third place in the Intermediate Poetry (Grade 7-9) division.
On Tuesday evening, Elise was presented with a certificate for her winning poem, “Listening”, which also appears in this year’s Portraits magazine, at the Royal Canadian Legion in Aurora.
For Elise, the idea for her poem arrived suddenly while she was in the shower. “I went and found a piece of paper and jotted it down, and it flowed from there,” she says.
Seeing her work recognized at this past Tuesday’s award ceremony was a wonderful experience, made even more special by a conversation with Mr. Bert Wolk of the Aurora Legion Youth Education Committee. Sharing a timeless piece of wisdom, Wolk told the young attendees, “We should learn from the wars in our past, so they aren’t repeated”—a sentiment that rings just as true today.
The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
Founded in 1972, The Country Day School is a co-educational private school offering programs in JK-12 and located on 100 acres north of Toronto in King.
