Exciting New Student Volunteer Opportunities for Getting Involved in the Community!

By Andy Hamilton ’27
This year, your new 2026-2027 Student Volunteer Coordinators (Andy, Maira, Tina and Kara) are excited to make volunteering more accessible, engaging, and meaningful for all Senior School students! As a first step, they have launched a new Volunteer Opportunities page, now linked directly on every student's Google homepage for quick and easy access.
While the Student Service Centre has always offered valuable community service resources, it has been recognized that many opportunities were not always as visible as they should be. During Monday's assembly, the Volunteer Coordinators also invited students to complete a short survey reflecting on their past volunteering experiences, the types of opportunities they would like to see this year, and how CDS can better support community involvement.

With every Ontario high school student required to complete at least 40 community involvement hours to graduate, these initiatives are the first step in a larger effort to listen to student interests and use that feedback to provide a wider variety of meaningful volunteer experiences throughout the year!

Join CDS Social Justice in Support of Strides for Seniors – Sat., Oct. 3 - By Addison Dean ’28

For the second year in a row, members of the CDS Social Justice club are participating in the UniversalCare Strides for Seniors this Saturday, October 3. All proceeds from the Senior School’s Dress Down Day tomorrow will go directly toward this important initiative, which benefits CIBPA PLACE, York Region’s first Non-Profit Residential Respite Dementia Care Centre that provides specialized care for individuals living with dementia and much-needed relief for their caregivers.

This is a family-friendly day at North Maple Regional Park in Vaughan, featuring 5km and 2.5km routes, food trucks, entertainment, activities for all ages, great participant swag, and a few surprises. It’s more than just a walk or run—it’s a celebration of community and compassion.

Any additional members of the CDS community are welcome to join us and all students can register for free by contacting Mr. Harvey by end of school tomorrow. Learn more about the event here: 2026 — 2026 UniversalCare Strides for Seniors — Race Roster — Registration, Marketing, Fundraising

CIBC Run for the Cure in Woodbridge – Sun., Oct.4 - By Zara Basso ’27

During the introduction of our Volunteer Coordinators, students also heard from CIBC Run for the Cure Student Ambassador Zara Basso '27, who invited the CDS community to take part in this Sunday's CIBC Run for the Cure in Woodbridge-Vaughan!

The event is Canada's largest volunteer-led fundraiser in support of breast cancer research, advocacy, and support services for those affected, with similar runs happening all over Southern Ontario. With cancer having touched the lives of many individuals and families within our community, this event is a meaningful opportunity to come together, show support, and make a difference.

Families can participate by walking or running alongside thousands of Canadians, or by volunteering in a variety of roles, including event setup, registration, course marshalling, participant support, and event teardown. Whether you choose to volunteer your time, walk or run with family and friends, or simply cheer on participants, every contribution helps make a meaningful difference!

We encourage all students and families to join us in supporting this important cause however they can this weekend. For more information, please check out the Run for the Cure website here: Woodbridge-Vaughan - CIBC Run for the Cure

We thank you for your support!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
