The Power of YET: Grade 2W Celebrates Optimism!

By Ashley Waller
Last week, the students of Grade 2W took centre stage at our Junior School assembly to share an important message about optimism and the power of one little word: YET!

Inspired by the picture book The Magical Yet by Angela DiTerlizzi, our students explored how changing the way we think can make a big difference when we face challenges. Rather than saying, "I can't do it," we learned to say, "I can't do it...YET!"
During our presentation, we invited the entire Junior School to join in the fun! Whether it was learning to tie our shoes, solving a tricky math problem, or reading a challenging word, our audience enthusiastically helped us turn every "I can't" into an "I can't...YET!"

Of course, we also discovered that simply saying YET isn't quite enough. We need to help our YET along by practising, asking for help, persevering, and trying again when things don't go as planned. Our students shared their own personal examples of things they haven't mastered YET, reminding everyone that we are all learning and growing at our own pace.

We ended our assembly by challenging everyone to think of something they can't do YET and to approach it with optimism and determination.

We are incredibly proud of our Grade 2W students for confidently sharing this meaningful message with our school community. We hope their words will inspire everyone to embrace challenges, believe in themselves, and remember that with practice, perseverance, and a little optimism, anything is possible... just maybe not YET!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
