Grade 10s explore SFX Makeup in Stage Design Workshop

By Aryanna Lococo ‘29
Last week, the Grade 10 stage design class and the senior drama class were given the opportunity to do a makeup workshop with Jessica Buchanan, a professional makeup artist.
We arrived at class and a wonderful setup of makeup products and mirrors to really help us get an understanding of how makeup is done in the work force. Both classes were looking forward to coming together for this occasion and seeing what was planned. Students looked at different spooky makeup designs such as skeleton faces and hands for Halloween. We explored different makeup techniques to help create accurate makeup looks with heavy detail. We learned about different ways we could use products, for instance, eyeliner as an outlining tool and eyeshadow for detailing and shading of the mouth. By the end, we all had parts of our skeletal systems shining through, some on our hands and others on our face.

This experience helped students improve their art technique by developing stronger skills in shading, sculpting and painting. It was a great way to give students a deeper understanding of the different job opportunities there are in the arts world as well as skills that we will incorporate in the future.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
