Last Saturday, 14 students from Grades 8 and 9 competed in the Junior Public Speaking qualifier tournament held at CDS. Students were required to perform a memorized persuasive speech, an interpretive reading, one round of parliamentary debate, as well as deliver an impromptu speech.
Our students saw spectacular results! Congratulations to Isla Gunning who placed 1st overall, Aaro Ko who placed 3rd overall, Austin Cheng who placed 5th overall, Charlize Bianchi, who placed 6th overall, and Mina Matsui who placed 8th overall.
As the top three from CDS, Isla, Aara and Austin have qualified to compete on the national stage in May in Vancouver, BC.
Additionally, our students achieved excellent results in individual categories. Honourable mention goes to Askshaya Chandradat, who placed second in Persuasive Speaking, and to Isla Gunning and Annabella Kwok who tied for fourth. Aara Ko and Isla Gunning placed first and second respectively in Interpretive Reading, and Reya Kumar placed fourth. In Parliamentary Debate, Vivienne Chen placed second and Shayla Vansh placed third. Isla Gunning placed first in Impromptu Speaking and Charlize Bianchi placed second.
Congratulations to all the hardworking students who participated in this competition!
The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
