Once again, the Grade 12 Film Studies classes participated in an annual competition to predict the winners of the Oscars! The 98th Academy Awards ceremony took place on Sunday, March 15, which fell over March Break this year. Before the break, students in both classes participated in a competition to predict the winners.
This year, Larkin Powers achieved a remarkable victory, securing the top spot with 18 correct predictions out of 24 categories. When discussing the strategy behind the selections, Larkin said that she looked at trends in articles, online opinions, and social media posts. Within the Film Studies class, Larkin’s favourite movie to analyze so far has been Pan’s Labyrinth.

As the Film program continues to thrive at CDS, the competition has expanded to include two class sections. This had led to a closely contested race for the runner-up position! This year, there was a tie: Vincent Vitullo and Nikolai Abramov each correctly predicted the winners for 17 categories.

Congratulations to Larkin, Vincent, and Nikolai for their exceptional insight, and to all the Grade 12 Film students who brought their critical lenses to this year's competition!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
