Curtain Call for Our Seniors: The GY Vocal Music Showcase
What a spectacular afternoon in the Paul C. Duckett Theatre a few weeks ago! Our GY Vocal Music recital was a true testament to the talent and dedication of our Graduating Year students. From opera to musicals to pop hits and jazz, the stage was alive with the incredible artistry of our three Grade 12 vocal students: Nico Hammer, Chloe Turner, and Meghan Weinroth.
For each of these students, vocal music has been a passion for as long as they can remember, and they have been participating in choirs, musical theatre, and vocal training for years.
Accompanied by Mrs. Curran on the piano, they began their recital with a beautiful choice of music: "Pure Imagination" from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The synchronicity happening on the stage was palpable, and the smiles added to the bittersweet poignancy of the moment.
Moving on, each student presented two songs of their choice, including musical theatre favourites: "I’ll Cover You" (Rent) from Nico, "Mother Knows Best" (Tangled) from Chloe, and "When He Sees Me" (Waitress) from Meghan.
They finished with a beautiful rendition of a custom-commissioned piece by acclaimed singer-songwriter and UofT Jazz professor Jacqueline Teh, which the Senior Vocal Class had the opportunity to collaborate on. For this, they were accompanied by fellow vocal students Delilah Johnstone ’28 (who also served as MC), Bella Koskinen ’27, and Maya Sood ’28. As Nico wrote in a story a few weeks ago, “The resulting song, 'Held,' embodies the class’s core values: connection, joy, and hope for the future. We are incredibly grateful to Jacqueline for her artistry and dedication.”
Thank you to the faculty, staff, friends, and family members who came out to show their support. It meant the world to our talented performers. We wish them the very best for the future and hope that making beautiful music will always play a role in their lives.
The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
Founded in 1972, The Country Day School is a co-educational private school offering programs in JK-12 and located on 100 acres north of Toronto in King.
