The Ontario Hockey League draft took place last weekend and saw two Country Day School students drafted in the top ten. Grade 10 students Jakob Chychrun and Victor Mete are teammates on the Toronto Jr. Canadiens AAA minor midget team and were taken 1st and 8th overall of the 300 picks made that day.

Originally from Florida, Jakob is finishing his first year at CDS.  Registering 43 points last season, the defenseman has many skills that caught the attention of Sarnia Sting Head Scout & Director of Player Personnel, Nick Sinclair.  “[Jakob] is a prototypical modern age defenseman that can do it all. He is a rare combination of size, speed, and strength, but his greatest asset as a player is his hockey sense. His on-ice awareness and anticipation are tools that take his game to another level.” Jakob has the special honour of being the 2014 winner of the Jack Ferguson Award, an award given to the first overall pick in the OHL Draft.

Hockey is in Jakob’s blood.  His father Jeff Chychrun played for eight seasons in the NHL and won the Stanley Cup with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1992.  “My father taught me everything I know,” attributes Jakob to his father’s influence.

Victor Mete, a CDS student since Grade 2, is an offensively-minded defenseman, who registered 30 points in 33 games last season.  Attack General Manager, Dale DeGray, is excited for his future, “Victor is a high-end defenseman that has the potential to be one of the top rearguards in the Ontario Hockey League. It was our position that we wanted to take the best player available and for us, that was Victor Mete.”

His CDS coach Mark Burleigh feels Victor is much more than just a hockey player; he embodies the mold of a student-athlete. “[Victor] fully embraced the philosophies of school sport and the expectations that come with being a student athlete at a school like CDS. Victor is a selfless player with a rare ability to make everyone on the team feel valued.”

Both students are a part of CDS’ High Performance Phys-Ed program that offers a balance for student-athletes who train for 12 or more hours outside of school.  The program offers individualized scheduling and customized schoolwork to help students reach their goals on and off the ice.

Jakob and Victor join other recent Country Day School alumni to be drafted into the OHL including Barclay Goodrow, Jason Wilson and Mitchell Binnie.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
