Grade 9 Green Industries Classes Have been Busy Planting

This term, Ms. Loukes' and Ms. WA's Green Industries classes have been busy replacing the old wooden planter boxes with the corrugated metal ones you can now see outside. This project involved a number of steps, including: starting the plants from seed, transferring seedlings to larger pots and giving them time to get bigger in the greenhouse before the frost warnings were lifted and they could be put in the planters.
There was also the matter of the planters themselves. The old wooden ones were dismantled and the new ones had to be assembled. There was also the issue of the dirt. We had plenty of it and had to shift it around as we changed the planters. Historically we purchased manure each year for the planters but this year we received a generous donation from the Loxton family [at Ashley's suggestion], with the offer of more where that came from.

We teachers will weed and water the garden beds throughout the summer. The fall Green Industries classes, and many others in the CDS community, will be able to enjoy the fruits of the spring groups' labour in September.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
