Pathways to People Team Delivers Big for the King Township Food Bank!

By Briana Courtemanche, Maddie Sutcliffe, Jacqueline O'Rourke-Corley, and Kirsten Baird
On Tuesday, our Grade 6 leaders in the Pathways to People team loaded up their boxes and headed to the King Township Food Bank for an impactful day of community service.

Upon arrival, our eager team was greeted by Geoff Simpson, President of the King Township Food Bank. We immediately got to work unloading items from the cars onto skids to be weighed. Together, we brought in three skids full of donations, weighing a staggering 1,454 pounds! Geoff was especially amazed by the massive delivery of diapers and thrilled to share that our Junior School broke the donation record by 600 pounds!

After weighing the items, Geoff led our students on an insightful tour of the facility to explain how food distribution works. We learned that families receive a shopping list (available in 15 languages!) to select essential items, with the goal of providing enough food to feed a family for a full week. In addition to non-perishable goods, the food bank relies on generous donations of fresh milk, vegetables, and meats from local farmers in the Holland Marsh area and our local No-Frills.

A major highlight of the visit was giving our young volunteers hands-on experience sorting and organizing the incoming goods to prepare them for the shelves.

A heartfelt thank you to our entire Junior School community for your immense generosity throughout the drive, and to the parent volunteers who helped drive and deliver the boxes. What a meaningful day of learning the value of giving back and supporting our neighbours for our young learners.

Let’s see if we can break the record again next year!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
