Grade 6 Year-End Math Event: The Stock Trading Game(Round 2)

On Tuesday, June 2nd, Grade 6 students participated in a second round of the stock trading game which was first played in January (see Part 1 from January 15, 2026.)

The game is set in a fictional northern Ontario town where students make decisions about investing their money in a number of small businesses.
In Round 1, businesses were dealing with US tariffs and a highly anticipated concert by Taylor Swift (which ended up being cancelled and causing economic turmoil!).

In Round 2, students met up with the same small businesses and learned how they were affected positively and negatively by the news of a proposed new subdivision and the opening of a gold mine!

Round 2 saw students thinking through their buying and selling decisions as they were more familiar with the logistics of the game and were beginning to see the benefits of “buying low and selling high.”

After four rounds of trading, students tallied up their total stocks and cash and determined their final portfolio values. The game was an exciting way for students to learn about the world of finance. Hopefully, students will continue to think about their experience and perhaps take an interest in the real stock market!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
