Grade 4s explore early history in Sainte-Marie among the Hurons

By Fiona Suddaby
The Grade 4 students had a wonderful and highly successful trip to Sainte-Marie among the Hurons last week! On a beautiful, sunny day, students stepped back in time to explore this historic 17th-century settlement and deepen their understanding of the lives of the French Jesuit missionaries and the Wendat people. Students explored the reconstructed longhouses, learning about how the Wendat lived, built their homes, prepared food, and worked together as a community. They also toured the settlement, discovered how the French lived and worked, and gained a greater appreciation for the similarities and differences between these two communities.
This experience provided a meaningful connection to our Social Studies learning as we continue to explore early societies, including how people met their basic needs, adapted to their environments, developed homes and communities, and used the resources available to them. As the Grade 4s study societies from different parts of the world, they are learning to compare the ways of life, recognize the importance of geography and natural resources, and appreciate the unique contributions of each society. It was wonderful to see the students making connections, asking thoughtful questions, and engaging so enthusiastically with their learning. The trip truly brought our classroom studies to life and provided a memorable experience that will support their learning throughout the year!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
