Our three CDS students who qualified to represent Ontario back in January, travelled to West Point Grey Academy in Vancouver from May 27-31 to participate in the Junior National Championships. Students competed in four categories over three days. Special mention goes to Isla Gunning who was a finalist in impromptu speaking and who placed 14th overall. Aara Ko’s interpretive reading was particularly well received, and Austin Cheng did very well in the persuasive speech category. Congratulations to all three students for representing CDS proudly.
This past Tuesday, several current and former public speaking and debating students hid quietly in Mrs. Wyndham-West’s kitchen and jumped out to surprise Mr. Robinson in celebration of his upcoming 70th birthday. Mr. Robinson has been working with CDS students since 2022, following his retirement from St. John's Ravenscourt School in Winnipeg, MB, where he was instrumental in establishing many important speech and debate tournaments around the world.

Students shared their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Mr. Robinson for the many things he has taught them over the years and for the hours he spent coaching them and accompanying them on trips. Students enjoyed an Afternoon Tea theme and a specially-made cake shaped like a lectern. Happy 70th birthday, Mr. Robinson!

And happy summer to all of our public speakers and debaters! We hope that next year will be another busy and exciting year for all of you!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
