Natalie Moonan

Senior School English & Social Science Teacher
How do you continue learning in your life?
Reading. Reading, reading, reading. And listening to many podcasts on my very long commute!

What is your professional passion?
To be present and supportive of each of the children in my classroom. There is so much out of our control in life, but we can control the kindness that we direct toward the people around us. I hope to model that for my students so that they can go out into the world and do the same.

What is one of your favourite interactions with students?
One of my favourite interactions with students is when I get to be a part of their graduation celebration. As a Senior School advisor, I guide a group of approximately 10 students through each day in the Senior School. That means that every four years, I get to pass their diploma to them on stage while we celebrate their accomplishments in front of the entire CDS community. There is something wonderful about this type of full-circle moment.

Favourite Thing about Working at CDS:
I love all of the green spaces that teachers have at their fingertips to enrich the learning experience. Also, my colleagues — every single one of them is wonderfully supportive.

Something You’ve Crossed off your Bucket List:
Scuba diving with hammerhead sharks will always top my bucket list. Experiencing a sunrise at Angkor Wat was pretty cool, too!

Other than CDS, I Support:
The creatures that we share our world with. I feel very passionately about the protection of our endangered animals, and feel particularly devastated by the habitat loss that orangutans face. The Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation is doing good work to help these gentle beings. Wildlife Preservation Canada (WPC) is also working hard to protect our creatures closer to home, including our pollinators, which are so important to our future.

Hometown:
I grew up in Thornhill, then Aurora. I currently call Toronto home.

Also Known as (i.e. Nickname or other role you have):
My family calls me coconut!
