2017 CAIS Senior Boys' 7s Champions

On Sunday April 23rd the Senior Boys’ Rugby team created history in winning the first-ever CAIS Rugby 7s tournament. They defeated Bishops College School (BCS) 15- 5 in the final match in the 2017 event held at Ashbury College.

7s Rugby is a fast paced version of the traditional version of rugby that requires fewer players. Inclusion this year provided smaller schools with a chance to participate in the national tournament for the first time in years.
The team approached their opening games as a ‘learning experience’ and the entire squad played in every game of the round robin. The team lost their first match 19- 5 to Greenwood College, their second 24-12 to Athol Murray College of Notre Dame and their last match of the day 15-5 to BCS. The first day had certainly been a learning experience.

Day two began with a quarterfinal match against Hillfield Strathallan College, who were the #1 seed in the other pool. On paper it looked like a mismatch, but CDS won the match in sudden death overtime, 12- 5, to advance to the semifinals against West Island College (WIC). Playing a well-structured game that denied WIC time and space, CDS triumphed 17-12. That victory meant they would play in the final on Sunday afternoon against BCS.

The final game was all CDS as they raced away to a 10- 0 lead before BCS countered with a try of their own. CDS was next to score and BCS was unable to mount any kind of comeback. The final score was 15-5 for CDS and they are the 2017 CAIS Senior Boys 7s Champions.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
